Healthy Walks
Walking is a fantastic form of exercise. It is free, enjoyable, easy and accessible, regardless of your age, fitness level or lifestyle. It is also a great way to meet new people in your area. Across Bexley we offer a series of healthy walks, each led by a trained walk leader. View the full schedule of walks on the right hand side.
People from all 'walks' of life are encouraged to come and enjoy the
healthy walks programme - especially if you are doing no exercise at the moment.
The programme is a gentle way to introduce you to exercise and all walks last about an hour - helping you meet the guidelines of 30 minutes of activity per day, at least five days a week.
Regular walking at any pace can:
- prevent diabetes
- increase 'good' cholesterol
- boost the immune system
- improve mood
- improve your fitness
- reduce the chances of depression.
If you have previously been inactive and 30 minutes per day sounds too challenging, you can start off by doing separate sessions of ten minutes or so to count towards the total goal.
Bexley Healthy walks
Bexley Care Trust have organised a number of public walks in some of the boroughs parks and open spaces, such as Cray Riverway and Shuttle Railway, find details on each below. Or you can download the full list of Healthy Walks from the links on the right hand side.
The Cray Riverway
The Cray Riverway is a signposted walk along the River Cray. Starting in Foots Cray Meadows it follows the river through North Cray to Hall Place at Bexley, where the Cray is joined by its smaller tributary, the Shuttle. From Hall Place, the Cray Riverway can be followed north to Crayford Marshes and the Thames. A leaflet is also available from local Tourist Information Centres.
The Shuttle Riverway
The Shuttle Riverway connects the Cray Riverway at Hall Place with the Green Chain Walk, which it meets at Avery Hill in the Borough of Greenwich, passing along the way through Marlborough Park, Willersley Park and Hollyoak Wood Park.
Green Chain Walks
The Green Chain is a string of over 300 public and private open spaces stretching across south-east London. The 40 mile walk links them together and is ideal for leisurely strolls or longer rambles. The walk starts on the Thamesside Walk (riverside promenade) at Thamesmead or Erith (Corinthian Manorway) and continues through Bexley for almost six miles, via Lesnes Abbey Woods, Bostall Heath and Woods, East Wickham Open Space and Oxleas Wood.
For information about the parts of the Green Chain Walk that pass through Bexley, watch the film below or go to the Green Chain Walk website via the right hand link.
